In automotive, construction, industrial equipment, and transportation applications, the right extruded rubber seal prevents leaks, keeps out contaminants, and extends component life.

Here are five essential types and what makes each unique: ◆ Bulb Seals  These feature an open, rounded or teardrop-shaped (sometimes half-moon or flat-bottom) bulb that compresses to form a seal. Commonly made from sponge rubber or softer EPDM foam, they create watertight barriers between doors and frames in vehicles and buildings. Dimensions typically include height plus inner/outer diameter. Installation is often by adhesive tape rather than mechanical fasteners.

◆ Bulb Trim Seals  Dual-durometer designs that combine a medium-density sponge rubber bulb (usually EPDM) with a rigid trim/retainer section (often PVC or TPE). This construction delivers resistance to water, ozone, sunlight, and temperature extremes while providing a clean finished edge. Many versions are weather-resistant, reusable, and recyclable.

◆ Lip Seals  Characterized by a flexible sealing lip (sometimes with an opening), these protect bearings on rotating shafts or bores. They retain lubricant while blocking dust and contaminants. Radial lip seals are widely used in high-speed crankshaft applications for diesel and gasoline engines, as well as pumps, mills, and other industrial equipment. Material selection is critical—oil-resistant elastomers are typically required.

◆ Door Seals  Designed to fill the gap between doors and frames, blocking wind, water, and weather. Applications range from cars and trucks to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, plus fuel tanks, electronic enclosures, and rooftop HVAC systems. While some are bulb-style, others are custom weather stripping—typically rectangular and defined more by function than by a single geometry.

◆ Accordion Seals  Extruded with accordion-like folds (bellows style), these seals dramatically change dimensions when stretched or compressed. Accordion boot seals weatherproof moving interfaces such as the connection between a truck cab and trailer. Often made from EPDM and sometimes reinforced with an internal spring steel loom, they handle large movements while maintaining continuous sealing.
